Lei is essentially Hawaiian for ‘garland’. It is a series of objects strung together and worn as a jewellery. Lei are constructed of flowers, leaves, sea shells, seeds, nuts, feathers or even bones of various animals. In Polynesia (group of around 1000 islands in Pacific ocean), these garlands are a symbol of love, friendship, celebration, honor or greeting.
This DIY paper Lei craft is fun and easy craft for all ages. Do try it at home with your kids.
SUPPLIES NEEDED
- Colored paper
- String
- Straws
- Scissors
- Hole punch or toothpick to make holes
STEPS:
1. Cut string.
Cut a string of desired length for your lei. Make a large knot at one end.
2. Make flowers.
We made 8 flowers each from 3 different colours of paper for our lei. You can use as many colours as you want. Fold the paper and cut multiple flowers at one time.
3. Make leaves Make same number of leaves as the flowers.
4. Make holes at the centre Make holes using a toothpick or a punch at the centre of each flower and leaf.
5. Cut straws Cut straws into linch pieces.
6. String together.
String the pieces together to make a beautiful lei. Tie the ends together after the last piece.

- hand eye coordination
- Also remember to talk to your kids about Lei, Hawaii and Polynesia. You can also point out these places in map. This will enhance their general knowledge
