How to make Papel Picado

How to make Papel Picado

Papel picado is a traditional Mexican craft made by cutting intricate designs into sheets of tissue paper. 40-50 coloured papers are first stacked together. Then, a chisel and a small mallet are used to cut out elaborate designs into the sheets. Colourful banners are created by stringing these Papel Picados together and hung on streets, alleys or walls during holidays and celebrations.

You can easily make a Papel picado of your own using some tissue or other craft papers. Here is what you will need:

  • Colourful tissue/craft paper (10"×6"approximately)
  • Scissors
  • String or twine
  • Glue

Instructions:

1. Fold approximately 1cm of the top edge of the paper. We will string the paper through this fold.

2. Fold the paper (widthwise) in half and then in half again.

3. Cut the lower edge like a semi-circle to create a scalloped edge.

4. Now, cut shapes along the two sides.

5. To cut a shape in the middle Fold the paper into half again, and cut a shape into the fold.

6. Unfold carefully and stick the papel picados to a long twine/string to create a beautiful banner.
