Essential skills for the next generation

Essential skills for the next generation

The meaning of success is different for different people. However, most people would agree that the main components of success are: the ability to enjoy one's work and a feeling of contentment one derives from it. With the macroeconomic trends changing at a faster pace than ever, the new generation would have unprecedented challenges and opportunities at their hands. So, what are the tools we can equip them with that would help them to take life head-on?

1. Adaptability.

"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the most responsive to change" - Charles Darwin

The COVID19 pandemic has proven the significance of adaptability to us. We have seen the richest and famous crumble under the pressures of the changing scenario. At the same time, there are many who turned this pandemic into an opportunity for themselves and scaled new heights. This change was huge and unprecedented, but navigating new technologies and adapting through cultural shifts is something most professionals need to do on regular basis. Want to raise more adaptable children? Encourage them to move out of their comfort zones. Expose them to different cultures, social conditions and ideas through travel, books, and movies. Let them look beyond themselves and explore the world. Inspire them to stop dwelling on the problems and focus on solutions.

2. Emotional Intelligence.

"Master your strengths. Outsource your weakness" - Ryan Kahn

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand, use and manage your emotions to navigate through life. People with higher emotional intelligence have a better understanding of their own selves and their strengths and weaknesses. They can communicate effectively, overcome challenges and build stronger relationships. They are more likely to succeed in their professional and personal lives. Help children to understand their emotions by talking to them. label their emotions and help them find a reason for it. How about telling your rebellious teenager, " Maybe your anger and mood swings are because of hormonal changes" or your cranky toddler "Are you feeling disappointed because you didn't win the game. It's okay to lose sometimes".

3. Critical thinking.

"Children must be taught how to think, not what to think" - Margaret Mead

With Al and automated technologies taking over a lot of work, humans increasingly will be required to do more decision making and problem-solving. The next generation will need to go beyond remembering information and rote learning. They need to learn how and where to apply what they have read. They need to learn to analyze and find the link between different ideas and concepts. If you want to improve critical thinking in kids, you need to encourage them to continue learning beyond school. Let them read books, solve puzzles, do worksheets, and make models. Enroll them in different activities. Apart from giving them traditional toys, you could also buy subscriptions to activity boxes.

4. Cultural Understanding.

Unlike, in the past, young people will now work with people from all over the world. They need to be well versed with different cultures and be able to appreciate it. Such all-rounder people with good world knowledge would be a great asset to the companies they work with. Motivate kids to read about different countries and different cultures. let them try different cuisines. Tell them stories of inspiring and common people from all over the world. Travel with them whenever you can.

5. Curiosity and love for learning.

"I am still learning" - Michaelangelo

at age 87 years Children are born curious. Children should be encouraged to daydream and ask questions. Their love for learning should not diminish as they grow older. A person who is always ready to learn is less likely to quit when faced with adversity and become more successful in the long run. Try answering your kid's questions in detail instead of monosyllables or single sentences. You can even research the answers on the internet together. Scotty's Wanderquest activity boxes are specially designed to spark your child's curiosity and improve their awareness about the world.
