How to cut back on screen time during lockdown?

During this lockdown times, our screen time has increased to levels never experienced before. The lockdown may end by the end of this month, but we surely know that the schools are not reopening soon. So what do we do? Be it online classes which are helping in continuing studies or the extracurricular activities, all are contributing to more time being spent in front of screen. This could lead to health issues such as strained dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, spine problems etc. Though the current COVID19 pandemic has made our smartphone and laptops inseparable parts of our lives now, it has became important for parents to remain vigilant to cut back on screen time. Here are some practical and tested tips to help you.

1. Set a schedule.

This is one of the most effective ways to get the best out of your child. Routine gives children a sense of security and stability. It also helps them plan their day and utilise the time better. Begin the day by spending a few minutes in the morning discussing with your children what activities they have to do during the day . Allow kids screen time at times when you would be busy or would like to have some time alone

2. Talk to your kids about the negative effects of too much screen time.

This will make them feel responsible and act sensibly

3. Set aside time to unplug.

There should be time slots in our daily schedule, when the entire family sets aside their gadgets. It can be meal times or an hour before going to bed. It should be a time to foster our ties and spend some quality time together.

4. Encourage other activities.

Kids mostly turn to screen because they are bored. They are more likely to leave their gadgets if they have something else to do. Involve them in household chores. Lockdown can be a good time to teach kids some life skills. They may not do it perfectly and may even make a mess. Have patience, it will really pay off later. Get them to read books. Give them activity boxes. let them have variety. It stimulates their brain and helps in their development.

5. Differentiate between good screen time and unnecessary screen time.

Let's face it smartphones have become indispensable part of our lives. You cannot just keep them away. Approach screen time like healthy food vs junk food. While you have to allow online studies and extracurricular activities, try to limit unnecessary exposure like movies, shows and games. Set aside a limited time for that.

6. Set an example.

All things said and done, kids follow their parents. This may be the toughest one , but it is also the most important one. If they see you reading a book, they are more likely to read.

Take a few steps in the right direction. It will help you reach further. Once you start working towards it, it will become a way of life - a more fruitful and meaningful way of life.
